CLEVELAND – The Allegheny College Gators secured five first-place finishes, two by senior Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic), and a provisional qualifying mark in the weight throw by Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) at the Case Western Reserve University Invitational on Friday, February 1.
The Gators won the four-team event with 129 points, 17 ahead of second-place Walsh. Case Western and Cuyahoga Community College rounded out the remaining two teams with 110 and 71 points, respectively.
Pfeufer’s two first-place finishes came in the long jump and triple jump, while adding a third-place finish in the high jump. In the long jump she leaped to a distance of 16-1.75, while out-distancing teammate Hannah Smith (Rice Lake, Wisc./Rice Lake) 34-11.0-to-30-11.25 in the triple jump. She placed behind classmate Liz Straus (Kirtland, Ohio/Kirtland) in the high jump, as each cleared 4-9.75; however, Straus cleared her final height in fewer misses.
Earley, who had already reached the NCAA Division III provisional standard at SUNY-Fredonia two weeks earlier, moved herself into 3rd in Division III with a toss of 53-3.75, over ten feet further than the closest competitor. She also finished as the runner-up in the shot put with a season-best effort of 39-10.50, a mark that is tops in the North Coast Athletic Conference this season by over two feet.
Ogechi Nwokedi took first in the 800-meter run, finishing the four-lap indoor event in a time of 2:26.11, before teaming with Rebecca Lendyak (Cowansville, Pa./Ford City), Laura Heltman (Mars, Pa./Mars) and Straus to finish first in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 4:29.09. Heltman also added to the Gators success in her individual event, the open 400-meter dash, where she took second in a time of 1:08.30.
Lendyak, the defending NCAC Sprinter of the Week, took third in each of her individual events, the 55-meter dash (7.74) and in the 200 (27.74), running a career-best in the latter. First-year Katie Stancik (Russell, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) took third in the mile run, finishing with a career-best time of 5:31.05, while also qualifying her for the NCAC Championships in March. Sophomore Mia Symoniak (Synder, N.Y./Amherst Central) rounded out Allegheny’s top-three performances by taking third in the 3,000-meter run in a career-best time of 10:45.36.
The members of the Gator track & field team that did not compete at Case Western will travel to Denison University on Saturday, February 2 to compete at the NCAC Relay meet.
