MEADVILLE, Pa. – Retired Allegheny College head soccer coach and current Gator assistant track coach Marty Goldberg is set to judge the world-famous Millrose Games this Friday and Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This year will mark the 40th consecutive year in which Goldberg has judged at the Millrose Games, a position reserved for less than 10 people in the world each year.
Goldberg began his work with Millrose back in 1969, when he was named clerk of course, in charge of athlete check-in and lane assignments. Over the past 10 years, he has been promoted as the event’s only line clerk, responsible for placing competing athletes in their respective lanes.
The Millrose Games started in 1908 and have grown into the oldest indoor track and field meet in the world. The event has been the site of a multitude of world records and has seen some of the most popular American and International track and field competitors in the world. Past American champions such as Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis, Jackie-Joyner Kersee, and Wilma Rudolph are only a few of the names on a long list of great track and field athletes to compete at the games.
“Being part of the Millrose Games is a special thing because it truly is the premier U.S. indoor meet in any given year,” noted Goldberg. “The events are particularly exciting during an Olympic year as athletes are really serious about getting themselves ready for the trials in July and the games in August.”
When asked if there was one special year or occasion that he found most memorable, Goldberg explained it was very difficult to pinpoint such a moment. “I have met so many incredible people and each year is equally important, so it isn’t easy to point out one special occasion. If I was to highlight one event, it would be when Jeremy Scott (a 2003 Allegheny graduate) performed at the event in Madison Square Garden. It is an enormous thrill to see a local boy make good.”
Goldberg, who coached the Allegheny men's soccer team to a school-record 131 victories from 1984-1997, serves as an associate in the admissions office in addition to his duties as an assistant with the Gator track program. He is a United States of America Track and Field (USATF) Official and is one of the most experienced and respected track officials in the nation. He has worked the Olympic Games, Olympic Trials, and National Junior Olympic Games in addition to his time at Millrose.
The 2008 Millrose Games will see a plethora of Olympic and World Champions as well as record-holders from throughout the nations. The games will be broadcast live Friday from 7-8:00 p.m. on ESPN2 and Saturday from 2:30-3:30 p.m. on NBC.
