Bell Leads Gators Back to the Win Column

WOOSTER, Ohio - Allegheny guard Brittany Bell (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) hit 6-of-8 three-pointers on her way to a career-high 20 points as the Gators (6-12, 3-6 NCAC) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 65-48 win at Wooster (6-11, 3-5 NCAC) on Wednesday night.

Allegheny trailed briefly at 2-0 when Wooster’s Taylor Keegan scored on a layup with less than a minute gone off the clock. The Gators grabbed the lead at 4-2 with a Bell three-pointer with 17:40 left in the half and never trailed again in the contest. The Scots managed to tie the game at 4-4, but saw Allegheny jump out with a 10-3 run, ending in a Laura Magnelli (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) bucket with 11:58 remaining before the break.

The Gator lead grew to as many as nine, at 19-10, when Jennifer Robinson (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) connected on a layup with 9:09 left in the period. Wooster rallied to within two, at 21-19, following a 9-2 run ending in a Keegan layup with 3:11 left on the first half clock.

Allegheny was able to end the half on a 9-2 run of their own, culminating in another Bell triple with 22 seconds on the clock, sending the game to intermission with a 30-22 Gator advantage.

The Gators opened the second half on a 17-5 run ending with a Shannon Culbreath (Columbus, Ohio/Eastmoor Academy) layup at the 11:30 mark. The Scots could not get closer than 11 the rest of the way as the Blue and Gold captured a 65-48 victory.

In addition to Bell’s 20-point effort, Simone tallied 17 points while Culbreath finished with eight points and 11 boards. Robinson pulled down seven rebounds while Magnelli recorded a game-high five assists.

Wooster was led by Kaitlin Krister with 17 points and eight boards.

The Gators shot .453 from the field while holding the Scots to .333 and held the rebounding advantage 41-29.

Allegheny has the weekend off from competition but will look to make it two in a row at Hiram on Tuesday, February 5 with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
