Gator Baseball Standout Mike Porada Passes Away
Jan 28, 2008 NEW CASTLE, Pa. – After a year-and-a-half bout with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, 1997 Allegheny College graduate and All-American baseball player Mike Porada, 32, has passed away. Porada, a 1997 All-America Second Team selection, was also named to the All-Region and All-Conference teams during his senior campaign.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 30, 2008 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., located at 941 S. Mill Street, New Castle, Pa. A Mass of Christian Buriel will be held Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Vitus Church. Burial will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens.
Over his three years with the squad, Allegheny went an unprecedented 109-32, including berths in the NCAA Regionals in each of his last two seasons. He ranks among Allegheny’s all-time bests in numerous career and single-season statistical categories, including second in career stolen bases (62), second in single-season stolen bases (42 in 1997) and first in runs scored in a season (75 in 1997) and times hit by pitch in a single season (21 in 1997). His career totals include a .314 batting average, a .441 on-base percentage, 126 runs scored and 49 RBIs while succeeding on 62 of his 65 stolen base attempts.
