FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Gators used a top three sweep in the 3,000-meter run, in addition to four other first place finishes, two by junior Matt Yurky (Homer City, Pa./Homer-Center), to help the team to a 21-point victory at the Mary Phillips Invitational hosted by Fredonia State University.

The Gators ended the meet with 92 points, easily ahead of Buffalo State (71), Fredonia (70) and Erie Community College (38).

Leading the way for the squad was Yurky, who took first in two events, the 55-meter hurdles and the triple jump, while also taking second in the long jump. In the hurdles, Yurky set a new personal best with a time of 8.06, just .12 off of the school record in the event. Yurky’s leap of 12.65 meters was also a NCAC qualifier, as his 6.14 in the long jump equaled the longest jump of his career, set a season ago at the league championships.

The Gator distance group earned its praise with a 1-2-3 finish in the 3,000, with senior Ryan Place (Meshoppen, Pa./Elk Lake) leading the way in a time of 8:45.06, a league qualifying standard finish. Tony Dipre (Twinsburg, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), who broke Place’s mile record in the opening meet of the 2007-08 season, finished second in a time of 9:11.84, with Craig Ball (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) rounding out the top three in a time of 9:26.36.

Freshman Cedric Gamble (Boalsburg, Pa./State College) was the top finisher in the pole vault, clearing 12-6 and winning via recording fewer misses than his Fredonia State opponent, while Alex Gorski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) defeated all competitors in the 400, finishing the two-lap race in a time of 54.84.

Chas Moore-Seymore (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) took second in the 55-meter dash in a NCAC qualifying time of 6.77, with freshmen Zac Ross (Meadville, Pa./Meadville Area) and Craig Stamm (Washington, Pa./Washington) each taking second; Ross in the mile (4:33.5) and Stamm in the 200 (24.33). Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken) rounded out Allegheny’s top three finishers with a third-place tally in the shot put, meeting the league championship qualifier with a metric distance of 14.73.

The Gators return to the track on January 25 when the squad will compete at the Penn State University National Invitational.
