Gators Fall to Knights 79-47
December 28, 2007
BEREA, Ohio – The Allegheny College women’s basketball team fell in the opening round of the Baldwin-Wallace Holiday Tournament to the Knights of Calvin College by a 79-47 score. The Gators opened the scoring in the game before Calvin, who had recently moved outside of the d3hoops.com top 25 poll, scored the next 10 points opening the way for the win.
The Gators jumped out first when Brittany Bell (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) hit a lay-in on the team’s first possession, before Calvin scored the next ten points, jumping out to a 10-2 lead. The Blue and Gold were able to hold their deficit to single digits until the 7:20 mark of the first half, when the Knights scored four straight points, opening a 13-point lead. Calvin kept their foot on the gas pedal for the remainder of the half, increasing their lead to 18 after the first 20 minutes of action.
After a Calvin basket to start the half, Allegheny scored four straight points to cut the deficit to 16, but that would be as close as the team would be able to climb within over the remainder of the game, with Calvin adding a late basket to give the game its 32-point final margin.
Laura Magnelli (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) was the lone Gator in double figures with 11 points, Shannon Culbreath (Columbus, Ohio/Eastmoor Academy) and Stephanie Wolf (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) added eight and seven points, respectively. Magnelli added a team-best six rebounds, while she and Jennifer Robinson (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) each dished out two assists.
Marcia Harris led four Knights in double figure scoring with 18 points, with Kelly Bennett scoring 12, Sara Partridge 11 and Nikki Zimmerman 10.
The Gators will take on the Panthers of Hanover College in the consolation game of the Baldwin-Wallace Holiday Tournament, with tip-off set for 1:30 p.m.
