NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - After a week and a half off from competition, the Allegheny women's basketball team (4-5) jumped back into action, defeating Westminster (6-2) 65-60 behind forward Stephanie Wolf's (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) 16 point, 10 rebound, six assist effort on Thursday evening.
Westminster grabbed its only lead of the game with an Emilee Ackerman lay-up after only 28 seconds had run off the clock. The Gators tied things up on their next possession when Wolf followed her own missed shot with a rebound and a lay-up at the 19:13 mark of the first half.
Allegheny would never trail again in the contest and grabbed its largest lead of the first period when Laura Magnelli (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) buried a jumper with 5:44 left before the break, putting the Gators ahead by nine at 25-16. The Titans eventually trimmed two off the deficit, as the game went into intermission with a 31-24 Allegheny advantage.
The Gators opened the second half with a 4-0 run capped by a Brittany Bell (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) lay-up with 16:21 remaining, giving the Blue and Gold its largest lead of the contest at 35-24. Westminster battled back with a 21-11 run to cut the lead to one, at 46-45, following a pair of Lynn Riley free throws with 8:52 left to play.
Allegheny attempted to pull away on several occasions, but saw Westminster get as close as one point three more times in the half. An Ackerman three-pointer with 2:28 left on the clock cut the Gator lead to 57-56, before Allegheny ended the game on an 8-4 run on 8-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe from Wolf, Bell, and Hilary Collins (Franklin, Pa./Franklin).
Emilie Simone (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) led the Gators with 19 points while Bell totaled 13. Combined, Wolf and Bell shot a perfect 14-of-14 from the free throw line as Allegheny shot .900 as a team. Ackerman totaled game-highs in points (27) and rebounds (11) for the Titans.
The Gators enjoy the next week off for the holidays before returning to action on December 28 for day one of the Baldwin-Wallace Tournament. Allegheny opens against Calvin at 7:30 p.m.
