KENT, Ohio – Allegheny College sophomore Tony Dipre (Twinsburg, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) became the first Gator in school history to run a sub-4:20 mile in competition, crossing the finish line in 4:19.16 at the Kent State University Golden Flash Gala.

The Gators finished the two-day event by meeting 21 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship qualifying standards, with six athletes; Josh Brannan (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe), Chas Moore-Seymore, Dipre, Zac Ross (Meadville, Pa./Meadville Area), Jakeb Zimmerman (Leechburg, Pa./The Kiski School) and Joe McMahon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin); reaching a qualifying mark in two events.

Brannan and Moore-Seymore qualified for the conference championships with their times in the 60- and 200-meter dashes. Brannan placed 19th in the shorter of the races in a time of 7.16, one that converts to 6.69 over a 55-meter race, while Moore-Seymore took 25th in a time of 7.23, which converts to a 6.75.

In the 200-meter dash, Brannan nearly broke his own school record, placing 14th in a time of 22.81, just five hundredths of a second off of the top time in school history set a season ago. Moore-Seymore followed with an impressive time of 23.27, taking 27th overall.

The 800 saw four Gators qualify to the league championships, led by Dipre who missed the school record by just under a half second, running to a time of 1:56.54, while teammates Garret Piispanen (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument) and Craig Ball (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) each finished under 2:00 with times of 1:57.33 and 1:57.88, respectively. The fourth and final qualifier came when Ben Eyer (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Central) finished the half-mile in a time of 2:00.44, under the league mark by nearly two seconds.

Dipre recorded his conference-qualifying double with his remarkable time in the mile, and was followed by Jamie Drab (North East, Pa./North East), who ran a time of 4:31.80, good enough to earn himself a spot at the NCAC Championships.

Ross and Zimmerman, both of whom ran to league-qualifying times in the 5,000-meter run the day before, qualified in the 3,000, running to times of 8:56.96 and 9:06.76, respectively.

Hurdler Matt Yurky (Homer City, Pa./Homer-Center) met two league qualifying marks in the same event, hurdling to a time of 8.86 in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles, before coming back in the finals and running a time of 8.84, times that convert to 8.32 and 8.30, respectively, in the 55-meter hurdles.

McMahon picked up the final league qualifying mark in the long jump, a day after smashing the championship mark in the triple jump, an event that he dominated at the conference meet a season ago. In the long jump, his leap of 20-5.25 was four inches farther than the league standard, guaranteeing him a chance at the conference title.

The Gators take a break for the Holidays, before taking to the track competitively on January 19 when the team travels to Fredonia, N.Y. to compete in the Fredonia State Invitational.
