Gators Dominate in Consolation

Dec 1, 2007

BOX SCORE

SALISBURY, Md. – The Allegheny College Gators picked up their biggest victory of the 2007-08 season, topping Shenandoah by an 87-54 final score. The Gators, who led by ten at halftime, outscored their opponent 50-27 in the second half en route to the blowout win.

Five players reached double figures in the scoring column, led by Brittany Bell’s (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field while going 2-of-2 from long range, with all-tournament team selection Emilie Simone (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) scoring 11 points.

Allegheny, the visitors on the scoreboard, did not trail in the contest with Stephanie Wolf (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), Jill Gregory (Jeannette, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) and Wolf again hitting baskets, helping the Blue and Gold jump out to a 6-0 advantage. The Hornets responded by scoring four straight points, cutting the deficit to two before another Allegheny run, this one 7-0, pushed the Gator advantage to nine.

The Gator lead reached double figures for the first time six minutes into the game after a Jennifer Robinson (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) free throw, as Shenandoah could only get as close as seven for the rest of the half, including with 1:44 to play in the period before Laura Magnelli (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) drained a three-point basket with three seconds left on the clock, sending Allegheny into the locker room with a 37-27 lead.

A 12-2 run to start the second half gave Allegheny a 20-point lead, as the team cruised to the comfortable victory.

Shannon Culbreath (Columbus, Ohio/Eastmoor Academy), and Magnelli scored 13 and 12 points, both marking career highs, with Simone and Gregory adding 11 and 10, respectively. All 13 players that dressed reached the scoring column. Wolf pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, while adding eight assists and three steals, all tops in the consolation contest.

The Gators, who had struggled recently from the field and long range, hit 5-of-7 three-point baskets and 33-of-54 shots overall, each easily season highs.

Alexis Hargbol was the lone Hornet in double figures with 10 points.

The Gators next take to the hardcourt on Wednesday, December 5 when the squad plays host to the Terriers of Hiram College with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
