Gator Women Fall at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Allegheny women's basketball team (1-3) dropped a second straight contest, this one a 77-55 defeat at the hands of Mount Union (2-2) on Saturday night.
Both sides played close in the first half, each holding the lead on three separate occasions. The Gators last lead came with 2:44 left when Stephanie Wolf (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) converted on a three-point play, making the score 20-18 in favor of the Blue and Gold. Mount Union answered quickly with a three-pointer by Katie Crider on the Raiders’ very next possession, giving the Purple and White a 21-20 lead.
Allegheny tied things up one more time following a Jen Robinson (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) free-throw on the Gators’ next trip down the floor, making the score 21-21. However, the Purple Raiders would quickly regain a lead they would never relinquish, taking a 28-24 advantage into the half.
The Raiders outscored the Gators 49-31 in the second half. Allegheny got as close as five with 14:15 left when Laura Magnelli (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) connected on a three-point shot to cut the deficit to 36-31, but could get no closer as Mount Union earned its second victory of the young season.
Wolf was the Gators’ top scorer, totaling 14 points. Allegheny also had four players with at least six points including Jill Gregory (Jeannette, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) with nine, Emilie Simone (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) with eight, Brittany Bell (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) with seven, and Hilary Collins (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) with six.
Mount Union was led by a game-high 19 points from Tessa Pohovey while Alicia Williams tossed in 16.
The Gators shot .460 from the field to Mount Union’s .600. The Raiders led the rebounding battle 32-22 and got 26 points off the bench, compared to only 11 for Allegheny.
Allegheny has the next week free from competition before traveling to Salisbury, Maryland for tournament action next weekend. The Gators open against Messiah at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
