Gators Fall Short Against Presidents
Nov 20, 2007 BOX SCORE
MEADVILLE, Pa. – Despite having their starting lineup out-size Allegheny by a total of 13 inches, the Washington & Jefferson Presidents needed a late surge to pull away from the Allegheny College Gators in non-conference action on Tuesday night. The Gators were led by a double-double effort from Emilie Simone (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) with 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, but it was not enough in the 58-44 loss.
Allegheny never led in the game, largely due to a struggle out of the gate offensively, as W&J jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the first two minutes and a 9-4 lead six minutes later. The Gators were able to cut into the deficit to 9-8 halfway through the period, before the Presidents regrouped and scored the next six points pushing their advantage to seven. An 8-2 run once again cut the deficit to one, as the Gators were able to tie the game at 21 on a three-point play from Simone with 1:47 to play in the opening half. A 7-1 run to end the period by W&J sent the visitors into the locker room with a six-point, 28-22 lead.
A lay-in by the President’s Emily Hays pushed their lead to eight, until six straight points by the Gators, two-point baskets from Hilary Collins (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), and two from Jill Gregory (Jeannette, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) cut the deficit to two. The Gators tied the game with 16:22 and 14:54 remaining, and by just two with 9:08 to play in the game before the squad ran out of steam against the larger Presidents – as the visitors ended the game on a 17-5 run.
Simone was the only Gator in double figures, with Gregory just off the pace with eight points. Stephanie Wolf (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), Collins and Jennifer Robinson (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) each scored six points, with Wolf dishing out a team-leading four assists to go with her seven rebounds.
Maggie Gibson and Hays each scored 16 points, with Gibson pulling down 10 rebounds for the double-double. Kennan Killeen, the Presidents’ leading scorer heading into the game, was held to just eight points, but dished out six assists and hit all four of her free throw attempts, taking her to a perfect 22-of-22 on the season.
The Gators break for the Thanksgiving holiday before traveling to Alliance, Ohio on Saturday, November 24 to face off against the Purple Raiders of Mount Union College.
