Gators Sweep Fredonia
Nov 17, 2007 FREDONIA, N.Y. – For the first time this season, both the Allegheny men’s and women’s swim teams can claim victory on the same day. The Gator women defeated SUNY-Fredonia 127-116 with the Allegheny men following suit to a 122-119 victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Gator women picked up a first and second place finish in relay competition, as the 400 yard medley relay team of Molly Hanlon (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area), Erin Ham (Franklin, Pa./Franklin Area), Alycia Conway (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Gilmour Academy), and Megan McGuire (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) opened the meet with a victory. In the 400 yard freestyle relay, the team of Kelly Marker (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte), Hannah Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic), Gina Major (Copley, Ohio/Copley), and McGuire placed second.
Individually, Carolyn Nairn (Lubbock, Texas/Brownell-Talbot) picked up three first place finishes in the 1650 yard freestyle (19:14.80), 200 yard backstroke (2:14.44), and 500 yard freestyle (5:26.58). Stewart was also a multiple time winner, finishing first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:21.91) and the 200 yard butterfly (2:19.90)
Ham and McGuire picked up Allegheny’s other first place finishes – Ham in the 50 yard freestyle (26.19) and McGuire in the 100 yard freestyle (57.39).
Other top finishes came from Hanlon, who finished second (2:03.21) in the 200 yard freestyle, and Rachelle Barrett (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area), who placed second in the 200 yard individual medley (2:23.91).
Allegheny’s men finished second in both relay contests, behind the team of Ryan Lawrence (Union City, Pa./Union City), Josh Sesek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood), Rob Schreiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), and Colin Gundling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) in the 400 yard medley and the squad of Ashton Kinney (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickly Academy), Beau Whiteman (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek), Cory Monroy (Goleta, Calif./Dos Pueblos), and Evan Lewis (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) in the 400 yard freestyle.
Kinney was one of three Gators with multiple wins, placing first in both the 1650 yard freestyle (17:56.88) and 500 yard freestyle (5:18.86). Sesek took first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:03.16) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:19.24) while Gundling won both the 50 yard free (23.26) and 200 yard butterfly (2:19.25).
Schreiner claimed victory in the 200 yard freestyle (1:56.50) while Lawrence was victorious in the 100 yard free (49.38).
The Gators took the top three spots in the 200 yard fly with Gundling first and Schreiner and Adam Gailey (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) finishing second and third respectively while grabbing the top two spots in the 500 yard free behind Kinney in first and Lawrence in second.
Allegheny’s aquatic teams return to the pool on Tuesday, November 20 with a home meet against Grove City. All of the action is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
