Gators Fall in Season Opener 70-56

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Despite double-double efforts from freshman Jill Gregory (Jeannette, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) and Stephanie Wolf (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), the Allegheny College Gators dropped their 2007-08 season opener to the Beavers of Bluffton University by a 70-56 score.

The two teams played evenly for the first five and a half minutes of the game, with the Gators holding a two-point, 10-8 lead before the visitors scored the next eight points to take a six-point, 18-12 lead. The visitors never trailed for the remainder of the game, stretching their lead to eight points at the halftime buzzer at 33-25.

In the second half Bluffton used an early 8-0 run to push their lead to 20, their highest of the contest. Allegheny started chipping away at the lead, closing to within 11 with just over a minute remaining, before the Beavers scored the final three points to give the game its 70-56 final score.

Emilie Simone (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) scored a team-high 14 points while Gregory and Wolf scored 13 and 12, respectively. Laura Magnelli (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) narrowly missed the double figure plateau with nine. Gregory and Wolf pulled down 13 and 12 rebounds, each, to complete their double-double, with Wolfe adding a team-high five assists and four steals.

Bluffton, which shot 50 percent from the field (28-of-56) was led by Angie Lee, who scored 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting, with Lindsay Bush adding 10. Kim Miller dished out a game-high six assists for the Beavers, while Ginny Buckingham picked up three steals.

The Gators take back to the court on Saturday, November 17 where they will face off in the tournament consolation game against Marietta.
