Gator Swimmers Fall to SUNY-New Paltz

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College Gators dropped a pair of results to the Hawks of State University of New York (SUNY) – New Paltz on Saturday, the men falling by a single point, 103-102 and the women falling 128-77.
The women started the meet in strong fashion, as the team of Carolyn Nairn (Lubbock, Texas/Brownell-Talbot), Erin Ham (Franklin, Pa./Franklin Area), Katie Scherry (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) and Ashley Whitehead (Meadville, Pa./Meadville Area) took first in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:51.21, out-touching the Hawks by three hundredths of a second.
Megan Knox (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) continued her strong first season with the Gators by taking first in the 1,000 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 11:18.45. Nairn and Scherry followed by taking the top two places in the 200 freestyle in times of 1:58.43 and 2:02.07, respectively. Whitehead’s second-place finish in the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.28 preceded Scherry’s runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly, as the first-year swimmer touched the wall in a time of 1:00.84.
Whitehead finished second in the 100 freestyle, before Nairn took top honors in the 500 freestyle, out-distancing the competition by over six seconds and touching the wall in 5:24.26. Ham ended the meet for the women by placing second in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:10.14.
The men's squad started well, taking first in the 200 medley relay, as Cory Monroy (Goleta, Calif./Dos Pueblos), Josh Sesek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood), Ryan Lawrence (Union City, Pa./Union City) and Colin Gundling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) swam to a time of 1:41.53. Ashton Kinney (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) took top honors in the 1,000 freestyle, before Lawrence won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:50.98.
Gundling followed with a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle (23.26), before Sesek took the top place in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:04.12, over two seconds ahead of the next finisher. Gundling’s second place finish in the 100 butterfly (57.22) was followed by a Lawrence second-place finish in the 100 freestyle (49.66).
Kinney picked up his second first-place finish, this time in the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:10.34, before Sesek defeated all competitors in the 100 breaststroke by three seconds, touching the wall in 1:01.37.
The Gators take to the pool again in a week when they travel to Fredonia, New York to compete against SUNY-Fredonia starting at 2:00 p.m.
