Gator Women Tabbed Fifth in NCAC Polls
Nov 1, 2007 CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Allegheny women’s basketball team was chosen fifth by both the coaches and the media during the annual North Coast Athletic Conference media day on Thursday morning.
The Gators, who finished last season 19-8 with an 11-5 mark in conference play, ended the year runner up at the NCAC Postseason tournament. Under first-year Head Coach Kate Costanzo, Allegheny returns a young squad with two starters and four letterwinners.
Denison was the overall top pick in the coaches poll, receiving six of a possible nine first-place votes and 76 points total. Kenyon (67) also received first place votes while Wittenberg (64), Ohio Wesleyan (59), Allegheny (42), Wooster (32), Earlham (28), Oberlin (23), and Hiram (14) rounded out the final seven spots.
Kenyon (164) narrowly edged Denison (163) in the media poll while each received nine first-place votes. Wittenberg (140), Ohio Wesleyan (124), Allegheny (96), Wooster (79), Oberlin (57), Earlham (54), and Hiram (23) were picked three through nine respectively.
“Our goal is to finish in the top four of the NCAC each year and have a chance at a title,” said Kostanzo. “Being picked fifth in both polls shows that the expectation is there, but we have to achieve it on the court.”
Allegheny opens the 2007-08 campaign by hosting the National City Tip-Off Tournament on November 16-17. The Gators open the weekend against Bluffton
