MEADVILLE, Pa. – An own goal with eight and a half minutes remaining in the contest gave the visiting Kenyon a 1-0 victory, securing the win and the 2007 North Coast Athletic Conference for the Lords, and will set up a rematch between the two schools in the first round of the NCAC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
Despite the Lords holding a 7-2 advantage in shots and a 4-3 lead in corner kicks, the teams remained tied, thanks in part to senior goalkeeper Ryan Larkin’s (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) three saves.
In the second half the Gators increased their offensive pressure, out-shooting the visitors 8-4 in the period, however it was an errant header on a clear attempt that ended in the back of the Gator goal that sealed the fate for the hosts, sending the Lords back to Gambier with the NCAC Regular Season Title.
Of Allegheny’s 10 shots, three players, James Fulton (New York, N.Y./Friends Seminary), Yusufu Sulai (Abuja, Nigeria/Bethany Christian) and Tom Ludwig (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) each had two.
Larkin picked up the loss, stopping five shots in the game, while his counterpart, Jamie White, had two saves in route to picking up his fifth shutout of the season.
The Gators, who had the fourth seed in the league’s postseason tournament locked up prior to the game, will travel to Gambier, Ohio for a rematch featuring the two teams, with kickoff time yet to be announced.
