Gators Victorious in Non-Conference Action
October 24, 2007
MEADVILLE, Pa. - A late goal from Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) propelled Allegheny (6-8-3) to a 1-0 senior day victory over Penn State Behrend (9-6-3), snapping the defending Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference champion's nine-game unbeaten streak.
Defense was the name of the game in the first half, as neither team was able to generate a serious threat on offense. The game went into intermission tied at zero with Allegheny outshooting the Lions 4-3.
The game remained scoreless until the 72nd minute when Hughes scored her second goal of the season following an Abby Silvester free-kick (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic), putting the Gators ahead 1-0.
Allegheny outshot the Lions 9-5 while PSU-Behrend held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
In goal, Rebecca O’Shurak (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) picked up the shutout for Allegheny without recording a save.
The Gators will look to carry the momentum into their final game of the season at Kenyon on Saturday. Allegheny will need a win to give themselves a chance at a conference tournament berth. Action from Gambier, Ohio is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
