Gator Swimmers Open Season

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Allegheny College swimming and diving teams opened their 2007-08 seasons at the North Coast Athletic Conference Relay Meet, hosted by Kenyon College. The women’s squad took third overall with 98 points while the men took eighth with 38 points.

Kenyon was victorious at both genders, scoring 156 during the women’s competition and 148 during the men’s, with Denison finishing runner-up in each, 24 behind in the women’s column and 14 on the men’s. Allegheny’s 98 points took third on the women’s side, and was followed by Wooster (94), Wittenberg (82), Oberlin (62), Hiram (56) and Ohio Wesleyan (40). On the men’s side Wabash took third overall with 108 points, as Wooster (88), Wittenberg (68), Hiram (64), Ohio Wesleyan (54), Allegheny (38) and Oberlin (34) rounded out the teams in the field.

Leading the way on the day for the women’s squad was the 200 freestyle relay team of Ashley Whitehead (Meadville, Pa./Meadville Area), Megan Knox (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), Erin Ham (Franklin, Pa./Franklin Area) and Carolyn Nairn (Lubbock, Texas/Brownell-Talbot), who took fourth overall in a time of 1:41.93.

Nairn, Ham and Whitehead teamed up with Katie Scherry (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) to finish seventh in the 200 medley relay, touching the wall in a time of 1:52.80 as the 200 breaststroke relay team of Ham, Andrea Chamberlain (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley), Caroline LaRochelle (Meadville, Pa./Meadville Area) and Alynn Maginness (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) also took seventh in a time of 2:13.56.

On the men’s side it was the 200 breast stroke relay team of Josh Sesek (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood), Cory Monroy (Goleta, Calif./Dos Pueblos), Alex Smith (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Area) and Patrick Juber (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) that had the team’s best finish, 10th, touching the wall in a time of 2:00.38, while the 1,500 free relay team of Ryan Lawrence (Union City, Pa./Union City), Ashton Kinney (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and Beau Whiteman (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) finished one place behind the aforementioned relay, taking 11th overall, in a time of 16:01.30.

The Gators look to open up their 2007-08 dual meet season on October 24 when the team hosts Clarion University starting at 6:00 p.m.
