Murphy’s Two Goals Leads Gators to Win
October 18, 2007
OBERLIN, Ohio – Allegheny College junior Katie Murphy’s (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) two goals helped the Gators score a season high three goals in a 3-1 victory over Oberlin College on Thursday evening.
The Gators dominated in the game, out-shooting the host Yeowomen 27-6 and holding a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Murphy wasted little time in finding the back of the net for the first time in the game, scoring just over 10 minutes into the period, before senior Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) provided the game-winning goal 22 minutes later off of an assist from Ashley Miller (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin). With 5:50 left on the first-half clock, the Gators tacked on an insurance goal, when Murphy booted a penalty kick past the Oberlin keeper.
The hosts ended the shutout bid with a goal 12 minutes into the second half, but that would be all of the offense that would come over the remainder of the contest, giving Allegheny the 3-1 win.
Rebecca O’Shurak (Meadville, Pa./Meadville Area) picked up her second straight win in goal for Allegheny, stopping four shots while allowing the solitary goal. Christine Zelnik picked up the loss for Oberlin, stopping 10 shots, including eight of those in the opening 45 minutes.
The Gators take to the road for a game at Wittenberg University starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 20.
