Gators Pick Up Fourth Straight Shutout Win
October 16, 2007
MEADVILLE, Pa. – Ryan Larkin’s (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) school-record tying 16th career shutout and a late goal by James Fulton (New York, N.Y./Friends Seminary) keyed a 1-0 Allegheny (10-4, 5-1 NCAC) victory over Hiram (10-3-2, 2-3-1 NCAC) on Tuesday night.
Most of the action in the first half took place in between the 20s, with neither team able to build much of an offensive attack. Hiram had the biggest threat, but saw a pair of shots turned away by stellar saves from Larkin. The game eventually went into intermission scoreless, with the Gators outshooting the Terriers 7-5.
Things picked up a bit in a very physical second half with both teams attempting an even nine shots in the period. The game seemed to be destined for overtime, but never made it there as Fulton scored his first goal of the year following a scramble in front of the net with just 2:47 left to play in the game.
Larkin continued his solid play in goal, stopping five shots en route to his eighth shutout of 2007.
Overall, Allegheny outshot Hiram 16-14 and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Gators improve their record in 1-0 games to 6-2 on the season and add to their point total (15) in the conference standings. The shutout was also the fourth consecutive for the Gators.
Allegheny returns to action on Saturday, October 20 with a road contest at Wittenberg. Action is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
