Gators Run Away with McDaniel Invite Title
Oct 15, 2007 HAMPSTEAD, Md. – After leading by an eye-popping 60 strokes after the opening day of the McDaniel Women’s Golf Fall Invitational, the Allegheny College Gators kept their foot on the gas pedal, out-distancing second place by a total of 57 on the second day for a two-day lead of 117 strokes, while placing all six of the team’s golfers inside of the top eight overall.
The Gators easily topped McDaniel College, the only other full team in the field, scoring a second-round total of 344, while McDaniel failed to break 400, carding a 401.
Kellie Gustas (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) won in a tiebreaker over classmate Laura Hilger (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland), as the pair each shot a two-day total of 165, Gustas’ score coming on a second-round 82 while Hilger carded an 83 on the second and final day. Jaime Reints (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Alison Bruckner (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) placed fifth and sixth by carding scores of 174 (88-86) and 175 (86-89), respectively. Kristi Archer (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) and Lisa Coleman (Lakeview, N.Y./Frontier Central) rounded out the Gators in attendance by tying for seventh place overall, Archer’s coming via scores of 88 and 89 and Coleman 90 and 87.
The Invitational caps a fantastic fall season, one in which the Gators won four of their five tournaments, while placing third of 13 in a strong DePauw Invitational for their only non-victory of the season. The team next takes to the links in competition on March 21 when they compete in the first day of a three-day Jekyll Island Tournament.
