Gators Start Strong at Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – The Allegheny College women’s golf team proved they deserved their lofty ranking, 11th in the latest Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) poll, by carding a blistering score of 305 en route to leading the field, composed entirely of NCAA Division II squads, by nine strokes after the first of two days of the Gannon University tournament.

The Gators shot a 305, ahead of the University of Findlay (314), Kutztown University (318), Gannon (319), Northwood (329) and Mercyhurst (338), while the Allegheny “B” team also shot well, carding a first-day score of 341, ahead of Wheeling Jesuit’s 342.

Lisa Coleman (Lakeview, N.Y./Frontier Central) carded a season-low 74 to take third after the first 18 holes, while Kellie Gustas (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory), Jaime Reints (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Kristi Archer (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) each shot a 77, with the trio sitting in a tie for fourth place overall. Alison Bruckner’s (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) first-round score of 79, and Laura Hilger’s (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) 80 filled the fifth and sixth spots on Allegheny’s “A” team.

The “B” squad was led by Laura Burkholder (Erie, Pa./Collegiate Academy), who shot a 79, currently tying for 10th overall, while Julia Wiers (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) and Hannah Schonau-Taylor (Newport, Ore./Newport) each shot under 90 with an 83 and an 86, respectively. Kelly Dreher (Westlake, Ohio/Magnificat) and Courtney Klein (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) each shot a 93 to tie for the fourth and final scoring spot on the squad. Lauren Torso (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) carded a 95, while Katie Donaldson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) brought a score of 90 into the clubhouse as an individual.

The squad looks to continue their strong play on the links in the second and final day of the tournament on Monday, before playing host to the Allegheny College Invitational on Tuesday, October 9.
