MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College Gators used goals from Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Abby Silvester (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) to upend 7-2-1 Earlham College in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
The game started with a strong offensive flurry, as the Quakers attempted five shots and the Gators three before Murphy found the back of the net from 30 yards out on a free kick, giving the Blue and Gold a 1-0 advantage. Neither team would be able to mount a consistent offensive attack following the goal, sending Allegheny into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
Silvester added a goal off of an assist from Ashley Miller (North Huntindon, Pa./Norwin) just seven minutes into the second stanza, giving the Gators a two-goal cushion, one they needed as the Quakers were awarded a penalty kick after a handball in the box, an attempt that Callie Thompson buried into the back of the net with 22 minutes remaining in the contest. The penalty kick would be the last shot attempt for the Quakers, as Allegheny’s defense tightened, helping the team hold on to the league victory.
Allegheny goalkeeper Kelsie Mozzoni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) picked up five saves in goal, while her counterpart Megan Holthaus had 10 while allowing the two goals.
For the contest, Allegheny out-shot Earlham 16-10, moving the team to 3-1-1 in games in which their shot total out-numbers the opponent.
The Gators travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. on October 3, where they will take on the Tartans of Carnegie Mellon University starting at 7:30 p.m.
