Gators Take Third at DePauw Classic

CLAYTON, Ind. – The Allegheny College Gators took third place at a highly competitive DePauw Small College Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Gators were just 12 strokes out of first place overall and two from second, while out-distancing fourth place by 21 strokes in the 13-team field. Kellie Gustas (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) continued her strong first year with the Gators by placing in a tie for fourth overall.

Otterbein won the event with a two-day score of 639 while host DePauw took second with a 649. The Gators’ score of 651 was easily ahead of fourth place Franklin’s total of 672. Rhodes (673), Marian (677), Centre (679), UC Santa Cruz (690), St. Joseph’s (704), Rose Hulman (715), Wittenberg (728), Manchester (789) and Anderson (814) rounded out the remaining nine teams in the field.

Guastas led the way for the Gators shooting rounds of 78 and 77 to finish with a two-day score of 155. Alison Bruckner (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) tied for 13th overall with rounds of 81 and 82 as Lisa Coleman (Lakeview, N.Y./Frontier Central) was one stroke behind Bruckner, carding an 83 and 81, good for a tie of 16th place. First-year Laura Hilger (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) rounded out the scoring four for the Gators overall for the tournament with rounds of 87 and 85, tying for 26th place. Kristi Archer (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) placed 32nd as the team’s fifth golfer, carding scores of 84 and 90 on the two days.

Competing as individuals, the Gator “B” squad carded what would have been a team score of 691, which would have placed them ninth, led by Jaime Reints (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) who averaged an 80 on the two days (79 and 81), placing in a tie of eighth place. Hannah Schonau-Taylor (Newport, Ore./Newport) carded a two-day score of 174, good for a tie of 32nd place on the par-72 course. Julia Wears (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) placed in a tie of 35th with a two-day total of 175 as Laura Burkholder (Erie, Pa./Collegiate Academy) finished in 40th place with a 182. Kelly Dreher (Westlake, Ohio/Magnificat) was the final Gator finisher in the tournament, carding a two-day total of 194 overall.

The Gators travel to the Gannon Invitational on Sunday and Monday, October 7-8 before hosting the Allegheny Invitational on Tuesday, October 9.
