Late Goal Propels Gators to Victory

MEADVILLE, Pa. - For the second consecutive game a single goal was enough for the Allegheny men's soccer team (5-3), as the Gators earned a 1-0 victory over Baldwin-Wallace (3-3-1) behind a late goal from freshman Peter Subasic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) on Wednesday evening at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
Most of the first half action took place in the Baldwin Wallace defensive half of the field, as the Gators attempted 12 shots to only two for the Yellow Jackets. The most serious scoring threat of the stanza came in the 27th minute when a shot from Allegheny’s Alex Habay (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) clipped the right post and fluttered out of bounds. The game eventually went into half tied at zero.
The Yellow Jackets picked up the pace in the second half and had their closest chance of the game turned away when Gator goalie Ryan Larkin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) made a leaping save to keep the game scoreless with just under 23 minutes left in regulation.
The game looked to be heading for overtime, but never made it there as Yusufu Sulai (Abuja, Nigeria/Bethany Christian) found a streaking Subasic in the box for his team-leading third goal of the season, giving Allegheny a second consecutive 1-0 win.
Larkin picked up the win in goal, stopping four shots, while Russ Mika recorded three saves in a losing effort for the Jackets.
Allegheny outshot Baldwin-Wallace 19-11 and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Gators return to action on Saturday, September 22 in a rematch of last season’s NCAC Championship game with Denison. The game is set for a 1:00 p.m. start at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
