Gators and Wolverines Battle To Scoreless Tie
Sep 12, 2007 Box Score
MEADVILLE, Pa. – Despite out-shooting Grove City by eight in an exhausting 110 minutes of soccer, the Allegheny College Gators (1-3-1) and the Wolverines (4-0-1) battled to a scoreless tie at Frank B. Fuhrer Field on Wednesday, September 12.
The first half saw few serious scoring threats, as both defenses played tight for a scoreless opening 45 minutes. The Gators played the majority of the period on the Wolverine’s end, attempting eight shots on goal, but were unable to convert on any of their tries.
The second half picked up where the first left off, with both teams unable to generate offense. The Gators had the game’s first threat, when a shot by Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) struck the crossbar, just missing a score in 70th minute of the contest.
Things got a bit more interesting with 15 minutes to play when Grove City saw a pair of open looks at the net come up short, only to be followed by a second Gator shot, this one by freshman Abby Silvester (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic), hitting the crossbar with 8:48 left to play.
The game would eventually make its way to overtime, but saw nothing solved, as the teams battled to a second extra frame. Grove City had the bulk of the attempts in the fourth stanza, but couldn’t find the back of the net, ending the game in a scoreless tie.
Both goalies turned in solid performances, with Gator freshman Kelsie Mozzoni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) stopping five shots and her counterpart Bethany Preston grabbing 11. Overall, the Gators attempted 22 shots to 14 for the Wolverines.
Allegheny returns to action on Saturday, September 15 with a road contest versus New York University. First kick from Staten Island, N.Y. is set for 2:00 p.m.
