September 9, 2007

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Allegheny College Gators fell to 1-3 on the season after falling in overtime to 2006 NCAA Tournament participant Transylvania University by a 2-1 score. The two teams each scored early in the game before the defenses tightened until the Pioneers scored a goal with just under two minutes to play in the first overtime period.

Allegheny struck first out of the gate when Ashley Miller (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) scored her team-leading second goal of the season just ten minutes into the game on the second shot of the afternoon for the Gators. Nearly 16 minutes later the Pioneers would counter with a goal of their own, beating Allegheny goalkeeper Rebecca O’Shurak (Meadville, Pa./Meadville Area) to the upper right corner, knotting the game at one goal apiece.

The game turned defensive for the next 70 minutes of action, with the Gators nearly reaching the back of the net with three minutes to play in regulation when Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) turning on a shot that was saved by Transylvania goalkeeper Ally Tucker. In the overtime period neither team was able to mount a strong attack until the Pioneers scored the game-winning tally on a goal by Katie Kelly to the lower left corner of the goal, giving the Pioneers a 2-1 victory.

O’Shurak picked up five goalkeeper saves, while her counterpart had the same total. Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) attempted a team-leading three shots, with the Gators falling in the category 13-11.

The Gators look to rebound on Wednesday, September 12 when the team plays its home opener against the Wolverines of Grove City College with kickoff set for 4:30 p.m.
