Early Goals Lead Allegheny to Win
Sep 9, 2007 Box Score
MEADVILLE, Pa. – A pair of first-half goals by Jim Beyer (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) and Jeremy Garbutt (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) that were just 44 seconds apart helped propel the Allegheny College Gators to a 2-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson in the final game of the first annual Allegheny College Classic.
After nearly 20 minutes of scoreless play, the Gators countered a President attack with one of their own, as Ryan Fetterolf (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) took the ball along the left side of the goal, and fed Beyer for the opening score of the contest.
Strong pressure led to the second goal, as Allegheny took possession of the ball deep on the W&J side and a pair of misses by Beyer and Bob Del Greco (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-LaSalle), the former’s hitting the post and the latter’s missing on a goalkeeper save, found the ball in the middle of the box where Garbutt buried it into the back of the net. The remaining 25 minutes of the first half were quiet, sending the Blue and Gold into the locker room with a 2-0 halftime lead.
Neither team would be able to mount a strong scoring attempt in the second half, keeping the final score at 2-0. Allegheny goalkeeper Ryan Larkin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) picked up his first shutout of the season, stopping three shots while his counterpart, Tyler Hodgins, had four saves in picking up the loss.
Defender Pat Bowman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and midfielder David Egan (Gibsonia, Pa./Shady Side Academy) were named to the All-Tournament Team for their play in the two games.
The Gators next take to the pitch on Wednesday, September 12 when they travel to University Heights, Ohio, where they will face off against the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.
