Gators Fall 2-0 to Colonels

Sep 9, 2007

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Allegheny College women’s soccer team fell to 1-2 on the season with a 2-0 loss to the Centre College Colonels (2-1) in the first game of the Glen Hyundai Transylvania University Showcase.

The Gators were out-shot in each of the halves, 11-4 in the opening 45 minutes and 9-3 in the final period, and the lopsided shot total paved the way for a Centre goal just 9:12 into the game when Erin Menard took a volley from Marina Hoe and beat Allegheny keeper Kelsie Mozzoni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson). The defenses tightened after the opening goal, with neither team able to put a shot into the back of the net for the remaining 30 minutes.

The late first-half trend carried over into the second stanza, until Allison Terry took a pass from Hoe in the game’s 61st minute, giving the hosts on the scoreboard a 2-0 advantage, one that would hold until the final buzzer.

Of the Gators’ seven shots, two came off the feet of Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Jillian Bolton (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central), with three others – Molly Waggoner (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero), Abby Silvester (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Rebekah Zeffiro (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) – each picking up one shot for the game.

Mozzoni stopped three shots in goal, picking up the loss, while her counterpart on the Centre sideline, Rosie McAuley, had four saves in picking up her second consecutive shutout.

The Gators take to the pitch on Sunday, September 9 when they face off against host Transylvania , a 2006 NCAA Tournament participant, with kickoff set for 3:00 p.m.
