MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Allegheny College men’s soccer team fell to 2-2 on the young 2007 season after falling in the second game of the first annual Allegheny College Soccer Classic. The Gators dropped the game by a score of 2-1 to the Rochester Institute of Technology (3-1) on Saturday, September 8. Oberlin (3-0-1) defeated Washington and Jefferson (1-2) in the tournament opener.

R.I.T grabbed the lead in the first half when Jake Yates scored off of a Casey Rathbone assist in the game’s 17th minute, and from there it was a defensive battle, with neither team finding the back of the net despite five shots on goal for the Gators and one for the Tigers.

Unfortunately for Allegheny the second half was similar to the first with R.I.T. holding the Blue and Gold scoreless before adding an insurance goal in the 69th minute on a Mark Frisicano break-a-way.

Allegheny rallied with less than three minutes left to play when sophomore defender Phil Burdette (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) scored the first goal of his career when he knocked in a header off of a corner kick from senior midfielder Andrew Stutzman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair). The Gators had one more try at a corner kick with nearly 30 seconds left to play, but could not convert as R.I.T held on for a 2-1 victory.

Ryan Larkin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) picked up the loss in goal for Allegheny, stopping a pair of shots, while his counterpart, Alan Smith, stopped five shots in helping R.I.T. to the victory.

In the tournament’s opening game, Oberlin earned a 4-0 victory over Washington and Jefferson behind Luke Hoffman and Skyler Dum, the former with two goals and the latter with a goal and an assist in the game. Zach Lipshultz grabbed four saves en route to picking up the victory in net for the Yeomen.

Day two of the tournament begins with a 12:30 p.m. contest between Oberlin and R.I.T on Sunday, followed by the Gators battling W&J at 3 p.m.
