Sep 2, 2007

Box Score

CLEVELAND – After falling to nationally ranked Case Western Reserve yesterday, the Gators bounced back with back-to-back goals to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 advantage, picking up the team’s first win of the 2007 season by a 2-1 score over Lawrence University in the final game of the Case Western Reserve Tournament.

Lawrence’s offense started quickly, putting in a score just 22 minutes into the game before the Gators countered five minutes later with the first goal of the 2007 season when senior Yusufu Sulai (Abuja, Nigeria/Bethany Christian) found Tom Ludwig (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay), a sophomore, for the first goal of his career with the Gators. Neither team could find the net for the remainder of the first half, sending the contest into a 1-1 tie at halftime.

The Gators wasted no time to start the second half, as freshman Peter Subasic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) took a pass from Jim Beyer (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) and beat the Lawrence keeper for the game-winning goal. The Allegheny defense tightened for the final 38 minutes, as Lawrence did not record a single shot in the second half of the contest.

Senior Ryan Larkin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) picked up the win in goals, stopping one of the two shots put on goal during the game.

The Gators continue their rough stretch of opponents to start the season, as the team will play host to the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University, the 21st ranked team according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
