Murphy’s Goal Gives Gators First Win of 2007
September 2, 2007
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Katie Murphy’s (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) overtime goal gave the Allegheny College women’s soccer team their first win of the 2007 season, balancing their record at 1-1 after a 2-1 victory over John Carroll University.
The two teams battled to a defensive first half in which neither the Gators nor the Blue Streaks could find the back of the net, despite seven shots from Allegheny and four from John Carroll. Both squads picked up the offensive intensity in the second half, as Allegheny scored 25 minutes into the second period with Jillian Bolton’s (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central) first goal of the season, giving the Gators the 1-0 lead. The advantage would not last long, just 1:58 to be exact, as the Blue Streaks countered with a Betsy Haigh goal, knotting the score at one apiece.
The remaining 17 minutes of regulation went without a goal, sending the game to extra time, where Murphy booted the game-winning goal, her first goal of the season and the fourth game-winning goal of her career.
Freshman goalkeeper Kelsie Mozzoni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) picked up the win in goal, stopping six shots and allowing the solitary second-half score.
After spending a week in Meadville, the Gators will once again hit the road for a tournament, this time in Lexington, Kentucky where they will compete in the Glen Hyundai Showcase, squaring off against Centre on Friday, September 8 at 5:30 p.m. and then against host Transylvania on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
