Women’s Soccer Drops Season Opener

Sep 1, 2007

Box Score

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – An early goal was not enough for the Allegheny College Gators, as they fell to the Wilmington College (Ohio) Lady Quakers by a 2-1 score in the season opener at the Rachel Miller Invitational hosted by the Rochester Institute of Technology.

The Gators made quick work of their first goal as sophomore Ashley Miller (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) weaved her way through the Lady Quaker defense, booting the season’s first goal, giving Allegheny a 1-0 lead. Wilmington countered six minutes later when the Quakers’ Kristen Elam put a free kick just out of freshman goalkeeper Rebecca O’Shurak’s (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) reach, knotting the game at one goal apiece.

The two teams faced an offensive stalemate until the 66th minute of the contest when the Quakers once again scored on a free kick, when Katie Skaleski floated a shot over O’Shurak’s head for the eventual game-winning goal. A Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) shot bounced off of the crossbar with less than 20 minutes left on the game clock, as it was the last threat the Gators put up in the 2-1 defeat.

The Gators were held to just five shots in the game, three by Miller, with O’Shurak stopping 10 attempts on the day. Wilmington’s keeper, Casey McKinney picked up the win after stopping one of the two shots on goal for the contest.

The Gators look to rebound as they will face off against John Carroll University tomorrow with the kickoff set for 1:30 p.m.
