Allegheny Names Football Captains

Aug 30, 2007

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College football team has elected seniors Andy Fleming (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), James Jones (Ellington, N.Y./Falconer Central), Mateo Villa (Windsor, Ohio/Middlefield Cardinal) and Curt Anderson (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia Notre Dame) as captains for the 2007 season.

Fleming, a member of the offensive line, returns after helping the Gator offense explode to an average of 414.4 yards per game and saw a 1,000-yard rusher and a quarterback throw for nearly 2,500 yards.

Jones, a wide receiver, saw action in two games last season after suffering an injury in the season opener where he hauled in four passes for 94 yards and a score. A former quarterback, Jones threw for 430 yards on 40-of-66 passes in 2004.

Villa, a middle linebacker, led the team in tackles last season with 80 while bookending the season with interceptions in the season opener and finale, respectively. He also recorded eight tackles for loss and has 153 tackles during his three-year career. For his efforts last year he was named second-team all-North Coast Athletic Conference.

Anderson, a safety, was named to the All-NCAC First Team last season after recording a team-best five pass breakups and a career-high 54 tackles. Anderson spearheaded a secondary that gave up just an average of 165.2 yards per game.

The Gators open their 2007 season at home on Saturday, September 1 when they play host to the Titans of Westminster College.
