Allegheny Women Picked Sixth by Coaches
Aug 26, 2007 CLEVELAND – The Allegheny College women’s soccer team was picked to finish the season ranked sixth in the North Coast Athletic Conference according to league coaches. The Gators, who return eight starters and 18 total letterwinners, earned 36 points, 14 behind Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster who tied for fourth.
Wittenberg, the league’s defending tournament champions from a year ago, was picked first, earning four first-place votes to compile 75 points, two ahead of second-place Denison, who had three first-place votes. Kenyon, the 2006 league regular season champion, was picked to finish third with 64 points and two first place votes while Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster tied for the fourth spot with 50 points. Rounding out the nine league schools behind the Gators was Earlham (28), Hiram (16) and Oberlin (13).
Among Allegheny’s returnees include athletes that scored 30 of the team’s 31 goals, highlighted by junior Christy McShea (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional), who scored a team-high nine goals while dishing out three assists, Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) who scored seven goals and added a pair of assists, and Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) who scored four goals and gave away four other scores a season ago.
The Gators start their 2007 season on September 1 when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. where they will face off against Wilmington (Ohio) College in the first game of the Rachel Miller Invitational starting at 12:30 p.m. before taking the pitch against John Carroll University the following day starting at 1:30 p.m.
