Earley Rebounds to Place Fourth
May 25, 2007 Hammer Throw Results
OSHKOSH, Wisc. – After narrowly making the finals in the hammer throw, junior Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) rebounded in the finals to take fourth place overall, earning All-America honors for the second time in her career.
A case of the pre-meet jitters and a first throw that hit the safety standards put Earley on edge, as she ended the first flight of the competition with a best throw of 160-feet, 7-inches, putting her in ninth place by just four inches, giving her a chance at the comeback.
Earley made good use of her second chance, tossing to a distance of 173-7 on her first throw of the finals, just off of her personal best, and moving her into fourth place overall. Her next throw 173-3 was still far enough to keep her in fourth. She sandwiched her attempts with fouls, throwing her sixth and final attempt into the right hand side standard, however, no other competitor was able to move ahead, as the junior kept her position.
Terri Schwab of Wisconsin-Oshkosh took home first place in the event, using a final-toss of 198-0 to defeat the field by over 16 feet.
The Gators have two remaining competitors at the National Meet, Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) in the triple jump and Ben Mourer (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) in the 5,000-meter run.
