Heptathlon Final Results

OSHKOSH, Wisc. – Allegheny College junior Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) placed 16th in her first NCAA Division III heptathlon championships of her career. Pfeufer scored a total of 4,177 points, while setting a school record in the 100-meter hurdles in the opening event.

Christina Acquaviva of SUNY-Cortland brought home the individual title, scoring 5,189 points, a total that would have smashed the Division III record of 5,012 in the event, if not for a prevailing tail-wind in two of her events on the first day. Amy Reed of Messiah took second with 5,142 points with Jillian Crandall of Wisconsin-River Falls taking third with 4,989 points.

In the opening event of the second day, the long jump, Pfeufer took second place overall, but could not move out of her 16th place first-day standing, however, moving to within 34 points of 15th place. Pfeufer’s leap of 17-feet, 1.5-inches came on her opening leap of the competition, while jumping to distances of 16-7.25 and 15-9.25 on her remaining two jumps. Acquaviva took her third individual event title, after winning the 100-hurdles and 200-meter dash yesterday, with a leap of 17-11.75.

Pfeufer continued her strong showing on the second day by taking eighth in the heptathlon group in the javelin throw, tossing the spear a distance of 113-1, earning 561 points, and pushing her momentarily into 15th place. Reed had the top throw in the section, tossing to a distance of 149-1, just under her season best which has her ranked fourth in Division III.

With one event remaining, Allegheny head coach Bill Ross had Pfeufer just cruise in the 800-meter run, trying to save herself for the triple jump tomorrow, as the junior ended the heptathlon with a time of 2:48.33, earning 481 points, giving her the 4,177 points for the competition. North Coast Athletic Conference foe Ashley Shaffer won the final event in a time of 2:16.19, moving herself into All-America status.

Pfeufer continues her championships tomorrow, as she is set to compete in the triple jump, an event she has earned All-America honors during the 2006 outdoor and 2007 indoor seasons.
