Corkum Takes 18th in 10,000
May 24, 2007
OSHKOSH, Wisc. – Senior Michelle Corkum (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) ended her collegiate career on Thursday, May 24 when she competed in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Division III National Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
The run started at a very pedestrian pace, with all 18 runners staying within a few seconds of each other for the first mile. After the opening four laps, however, the field separated into three groups, the top three took off ahead of the pack, a group of four followed behind them, leaving the remaining 11 runners to compete for the eighth position.
Two miles later the third pack started to thin, and Corkum fought to keep with the group, but could not hold on. The senior did not back down, and continued pushing her pace until the end, finishing the 6.2-mile race in a time of 38:34.50.
Amherst’s Shauneen Garrahan picked up the victory, pulling away from the field over the last half-mile, running to a time of 34:48.19.
