Women's Heptathlon Results

OSHKOSH, Wisc. – Allegheny College junior Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) started of the heptathlon at the 2007 National Championships with a bang, setting a new school record in the opening event, the 100-meter hurdles, ending the day in 16th place overall, with four of the seven events completed.

After the first day Pfeufer has a total of 2,515 points. Christina Acquavia from SUNY-Cortland is the first-day leader with 3,181 points while Lindsay Lange from Hope (3,148 pts.), Jillian Crandall of Wisconsin-River Falls (3,094), Catherine Chappell from the Milwaukee School of Engineering (3,088) and Ashley DeMarco of Emory University (3,067) round out the top five.

Pfeufer took 13th overall in the hurdles, running and leaping to a time of 15.62, earning 762 points, 11 more points than her qualifying mark set at the NCAC Multi-Event Championships. Acquaviva, holder of Division III’s fastest time in the event this season, won easily with a time of 13.87, the fastest in Division III this season, earning her 998 points.

A leap of 5-2.5 in the high jump, her third best leap on the season and the eighth highest jump of the competition, finished a millimeter higher than her performance at the NCAC Multi-Events. Her 724 points gives her 12 more than her earlier mark in the event, while her 1,486 points after two events put her in 14th place in the field. Wisconsin-River Falls’ Jillian Crandall, who came in ranked eighth in Division III in the event, leaped to a Division III high 5-8.5, securing 903 points.

Pfeufer struggled in the shot put, placing 18th with a toss of 24-0.75, giving her 356 points, nearly a hundred less than she earned after her throw of 29-7.5 at the league championships. Brooke Barker of Pacific took top honors in that phase of the heptathalon with a throw of 41-4.5, earning 702 points.

The junior rounded out her first day of her inaugural national multi-event championships by running to a time of 27.48 in the 200-meter dash in the middle of a driving rainstorm. She placed 17th in the field with a new career best, earning 673 points, gaining 52 points on her previous best total. Acquaviva won her second event of the competition, finishing the half-lap in a time of 24.89, a time that would have ranked her in a tie for eighth in Division III coming into the championships, giving her 897 points.

Pfeufer continues the heptathlon tomorrow with the javelin, the long jump and the 800-meter run.
