Ross Named Region Women's C.O.Y.
May 23, 2007 OSHKOSH, Wisc. – Allegheny College head track and field coach Bill Ross has been named the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women’s Mideast Region Coach of the Year.
The Gators took second at the 2007 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) indoor and outdoor championships. In his tenure at Allegheny, Ross has led the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams to 23 league championships, the most successful coach in his field in league history.
Allegheny has five athletes at the 2007 NCAA Division III National Championships, three women and two men. Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic), Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Michelle Corkum (McMurry, Pa./Peters Township) represent the women’s squad, while Ben Mourer (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) and Chris Corkins (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) represent the men.
The championships begin on Thursday, May 24 when Pfeufer participates in the heptathlon 100-meter hurdles starting at 1:00 p.m. CST and follows with the high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash on the opening day. Corkins and Corkum are each running the 10,000-meter run on the opening day, Corkins at 6:40 p.m. and Corkum 7:50 p.m.
The heptathlon concludes on Friday with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run for Pfeufer, as Early’s event, the hammer throw, starts at 6:00 p.m. on the same day. The third and final day of the championships give Pfeufer the chance to participate on just one event, the triple jump starting at 2:00 p.m. and is followed by Mourer in the 5,000 at 3:55 p.m.
