Smith Breaks School Steeple Record

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Allegheny College junior Matt Smith (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) broke the two-year-old school record in the 3,000-meter steeple chase with a time of 9:28.46, placing 13th in the field, on the second day of the North Central College Gregory Invitational.

Also competing for the Gators in the last meet of the qualifying season was junior thrower Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken), who took seventh in the shot put with a toss of 49-feet, 7.25-inches, his second longest throw of the 2007 season.

Craig Ball (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) and Garret Piispanen (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument) finished within a second of each other in the 800-meter run, Ball placing 30th in a time of 1:56.14 with Piispanen taking 33rd, crossing the finish line in 1:56.98 in the two-lap event.

The quartet of competitors end the regular season for the Gators, with the team’s next meet being the season’s last, the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Gators are sending two men, Ben Mourer (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) and Chris Corkins (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs, respectively, and three women Michelle Corkum (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) in the 10,000, Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) in the hammer throw and Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) in the triple jump and the heptathlon.
