May 12, 2007

Box Score

NEW CONCORD, Ohio - The Allegheny College Gators saw their 2007 season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to the ninth ranked Muskies of Muskingum College in the Gators' third game of the tournament.

Both teams struggled to score in the early goings, with neither team able to reach the scoreboard until the last half of the game. Allegheny used key defensive plays early in the game, including a line-drive double play in the first inning, and a tag-out on an over-slide of a stolen base attempt in the second inning.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Amy Iammarino hit a one-out solo home run to left center to end the scoreless tie.

Emmalynn Sigrist (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) reached on a one-out single in the fifth inning before pinch runner Maggie Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) stole second base. A diving catch by the second baseman kept the younger of the Bodenlos sisters on second base before a pop-up ended the rally attempt, the Gators’ strongest attempt at a run in the game.

The Muskies threatened to push another run across the plate when with two outs and runners on first and second in the top of the sixth inning, Iammarino hit a single into left field. Legendary Muskingum coach Donna Newberry sent their speedy runner from second, however the throw from left fielder Sarah Reilly (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) was on target to catcher Sigrist, tagging out Jamie Echelberger at the plate.

The hosts tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning with a two-run double off the bat of Randi Dance, giving the game its 3-0 final score.

Allegheny was held to three hits by Muskingum sophomore pitcher Heather Martin, who of which came from the bat of Sigrist, who was a perfect 2-for-2 while Katie Wills (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) picked up the team’s only other hit in the game. Freshman pitcher Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) pitched the entire seven innings of the game, giving up 10 hits and three earned runs while striking out one.

Muskingum catcher Kari Hoying was 3-for-4 batting with Iammarino and Molly Jones each going 2-for-3, with the trio picking up seven of the team’s 10 hits. Martin pitched the complete game shutout, striking out nine and walking none in improving her record to 15-3 overall.

The loss ends Allegheny’s season, sending the Gators into next season with an even 19-19 record without a senior on their roster.
