Gators Take 4-0 Win over Maryville

May 11, 2007

Box Score

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Allegheny College Gators took a 4-0 victory over the Maryville (TN) Scots on Friday morning, sending the Gators into the third day of competition. Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) was 3-for-3 in the game, while Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) picked up the shutout win for the Blue and Gold.

The start to the game looked promising for the Blue and Gold, as leadoff hitter Bodenlos started with a single to the shortstop, advancing to second on a fielder’s indifference on the same play. A sacrifice bunt by Katie Wills (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) put Bodenlos on third base before a pop fly to the second baseman and a groundout to the shortstop ended the threat for Allegheny.

Maryville put up a threat in their half of the first inning when leadoff hitter Samantha Thearp singled through the left side and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. On the second pitch to the next batter, however, Thearp was thrown out on a stolen base attempt at third base, and a strikeout to the third batter capped the inning with a 0-0 score.

For the third consecutive half-inning the leadoff batter reached base, with Elizabeth Burr (Farmdale, Ohio/Badger) singling through the left side, and was advanced to second on a bunt by Rebecca Burns (Rogersville, Pa./West Greene). After a long flyout to left field, Burr was caught stealing after batter Stephanie Lasinski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) was unable to make contact on a ball on a hit-and-run call.

The Scots put a lot of pressure on Allegheny pitcher Korotkin, loading the bases with two outs, before the first-year fire-baller struck out the Maryville batter, keeping the game knotted at 0-0 through two innings.

The Gators reached the scoreboard first in the third inning when Bodenlos singled with two outs, stole second and then scored on a Crystal Ptacek (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) single.

Looking to rally, the Scots put runners on first and second with two outs, before a groundout to Korotkin stopped the rally. The Scots got the first two Gators to ground out starting the fourth inning before three straight singles from Emmalynn Sigrist (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North), Lasinski and Sarah Reilly (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) loaded the bases before Bodenlos was hit by a pitch, driving in Sigrist, and taking Allegheny’s lead to 2-0. On the very next pitch Wills hit a line-drive single to center field, scoring Lasinski and Reilly and giving Allegheny a 4-0 lead after their turn in the fourth inning.

In what was a trend for the game, Maryville again threatened in their at-bats, seeing a strikeout sandwiched between a pair of singles putting runners on first and second with one out. A fielder’s choice to Korotkin and a short pop-up to Burns at third base once again kept the Scots off of the scoreboard.

Back-to-back 1-2-3 innings for the Gators were the first of the game for the visitors on the scoreboard, but the Scots could not make use of their chances in either inning, sending the Gators into the seventh inning with a 4-0 lead. Allegheny put the pressure on the Scots in the top of the seventh inning, putting runners on first and second with one out, but two hard-hit line-outs ended the Gators’ turn.

A ground out, a fly out started the inning before an error put the Scots’ third batter online. A walk added another baserunner for the hosts on the scoreboard until a sharply hit line drive was caught by center fielder Wills, sending the Gators to Saturday’s next game.

Bodenlos was a perfect 3-for-3 while Ptacek also had multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Each of the four runs was scored by a different batter, while Wills led the team with two RBIs. Korotkin scattered six hits in seven innings of work, striking out four and allowing four walks, picking up her fifth shutout of the season.
The Gators will compete tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. when they will face off against the loser of the Muskingum/Bridgewater game starting immediately following the Allegheny win.
