Gators Fall in NCAA Opener
May 10, 2007 Box Score
NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Allegheny College Gators dropped their 2007 NCAA Regional Tournament opener to the Tigers of DePauw University by a 2-1 score.
The two teams started the game in a fierce pitchers duel, with DePauw’s Megan Soultz and Allegheny’s duo of Alicia Morley (Sinclairville, N.Y./Cassadaga Valley) and Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) pitching a stellar game to open up each team’s NCAA run. Morley, the starter, did not allow a run for the first three and a half innings of the game before the Tigers squeezed a run across the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning when the Tigers used a pair of walks and then a single to left field to give the hosts on the scoreboard a 1-0 lead.
An inning and a half later the Gators countered when junior Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) singled to left field and then stole second base, her 30th of the season and 56th of her career, the latter number giving her sole possession of the Allegheny record. Katie Wills (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) reached on an error by the third baseman, before Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwestern) singled in Bodenlos, knotting the game at one run apiece.
The tie score did not last long, however, as the Tigers used a single, a sacrifice bunt and another single to plate the winning run. The Gators went in order in the top of the seventh inning, giving the Tigers a win by the slimmest of margins.
Ryan led the way for the Gators by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while Bodenlos and Allison Burr (Farmdale, Ohio/Badger) each had a hit. Morley pitched the first 3.2 innings of the game, striking out one and allowing five hits and one earned run, while Korotkin pitched in relief, scattering three hits over 2.1 innings and walking just one.
Jessica Krueger was 2-for-3 for the Tigers, as the team’s other six hits came from six different bats. Kristy Mahon and Laura Schlensker each had one RBI with Annie Morgan and Schlensker each scoring a run. Soultz pitched the entire seven innings, striking out four and scattering four hits.
The Gators take to the field again tomorrow where they take on Maryville (TN) in an elimination game for both squads with first pitch set for noon.
