Bodenlos, Ryan Earn All-Region Honors

May 8, 2007

All-Region Teams

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Two Allegheny College softball team members, junior Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and sophomore Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwestern) have been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Central Region teams, announced on Tuesday.

Bodenlos, a second baseman, was named to the All-Region First Team, becoming the first Gator to accomplish the feat since 1999 when Jen Lorenzen brought in first-team honors. This season Bodenlos has smashed the season conference and school record in stolen bases, pilfering 29 bases in 32 attempts. The total breaks the school single season record of 27, set by Colleen Holthaus in 1999, and the conference record, which Bodenlos held a share of after her 22 steals a year ago. Additionally, Bodenlos is tied for the school career steals record with 55, putting her in a three-way tie at the top with Sue Custer (1983-86) and Beth McCullough (1980-83), while topping the league mark by 14. She also leads the team with 32 runs scored, and is second on the team in batting average (.408) and slugging percentage (.474). A season ago Bodenlos was named to the All-Region Third Team.

Ryan, the team’s shortstop, was named to the All-Region Third Team for the second consecutive season. She has played and started in each of the team’s 35 games this season and leads the team in batting average (.439), slugging percentage (.748), hits (47) triples (6), home runs (5), runs batted in (31), total bases (80), walks (14), intentional walks (3) and is tied for the team lead with six doubles. Her name is scattered among the career record books, and in just two years her .430 career batting average is currently the highest in school history for batters with more than 200 at-bats, while her slugging percentage of .696 and her on-base percentage of .498 are second best. Her 11 triples is the fifth highest total and her eight home runs are tied for the ninth most in program history.

The Gators advanced to their 15th NCAA Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Denison University in the championship game of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The team is set to face off against DePauw University on Thursday May 10 with the first pitch set for 4:00 p.m.
