Gators Win Over Baldwin-Wallace

May 1, 2007

Game 1 Box

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Gators shut out Baldwin-Wallace College 1-0 in the first game of a double header on Tuesday, before the weather shut out both teams in the nightcap, with the game being called due to inclement weather with one out in the top of the second inning. Allegheny freshman Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day) picked up the win, pitching the entire seven innings, striking out three and scattering five hits en route to the win.

Both pitchers had no-hitters going for the early portions of the game, as the first hit in the contest came in the fourth inning when Elizabeth Burr (Farmdale, Ohio/Badger) hit an infield single to the shortstop. Baldwin-Wallace started the fifth inning with back-to-back hits, a single and a double, putting runners on second and third with no outs, before Korotkin picked up a ground ball and tossed it to catcher Emmalynn Sigrist (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) who tagged out the runner on third. Another fielder’s choice put runners on the corners until the next batter grounded out to the first baseman unassisted.

The Gators, using the momentum of their hit in the previous inning, were able to get a run across the board. The inning started when Danielle Nordin (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) singled, and was pinch ran for by Maggie Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy). Sarah Reilly (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) advanced Bodenlos to second with a sacrifice bunt, before Bodenlos stole third base on the next pitch. Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) walked, and did not stop at first base, intentionally getting herself in a rundown, letting her sister score the winning run while being tagged out at second base.

A pair of two-out singles could not start a rally for the Yellow Jackets in the sixth inning and a double in the seventh was unable to be brought around as the Gators held on to the 1-0 win.

Burr, Nordin and Crystal Ptacek (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) picked up the only three hits for the Gators on the day, while each of Baldwin-Wallace’s came from different batters. Korotkin improved to 6-4 on the year while the Baldwin-Wallace pitcher, Katey Munshower fell to 5-12 despite holding Allegheny to just three hits and striking out one.

The second game started more offensively, with each team scoring a run in the first inning, before the game was called due to lightning and the probable and eventual threat of inclement weather with one out in the second inning.

The Gators next travel to Granville, Ohio to compete for the North Coast Athletic Conference crown at the league championships hosted by Denison. The team will play Wittenberg University in the first game, and then either Hiram or Denison in the second game of the day.
