Apr 29, 2007 Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box
MEADVILLE, Pa. – With just their seeding for the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at stake on Saturday, the Allegheny College Gators fell in a pair to Wittenberg University by scores of 8-5 and 4-0. The Gators, now the third seed in the league tournament, will face off against Wittenberg yet again on Friday in the first round, with host Denison University playing against Hiram College in the other first-round game.
In the opening game, the Tigers jumped out early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning before the Blue and Gold countered with a run in the bottom half of the first when Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy), left, singled and stole second base, tying the school’s single season stolen base record with 27. A sacrifice bunt attempt was beat out by Crystal Ptacek (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny), who then stole second base to put runners on second and third with no outs. A groundout by Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwestern) pushed Bodenlos across the plate, ending the shutout bid for the visitors.
Another run by the Tigers in the second inning, followed by four more in the fourth gave Wittenberg a commanding 8-1 lead halfway through the contest. A run in the fourth inning when Ryan scored an unearned run on a pair of errors was followed by a three-run fifth inning, as Rebecca Burns (Rogersville, Pa./West Greene)singled in Bodenlos, before being driven in on an error by Katie Wills (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour). Elizabeth Burr (Farmdale, Ohio/Badger) scored after Emmalynn Sigrist (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) singled up the middle, giving the game its 8-4 final score.
Attempts in the sixth and seventh innings would not come through, as the Gators dropped the opening game. Bodenlos and Wills were each 2-for-4 from the plate, with Bodenlos scoring two times. Alicia Morley (Sinclairville, N.Y./Cassadaga Valley) picked up the loss, pitching the first inning, striking out one but allowing four hits and three earned runs. Allison Korotkin (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day), bottom left, pitched the final six innings, giving up eight hits and three earned runs, while striking out six.
Cameron Catalfu and Nicole Ottavi were each 3-for-4 from the plate for the Tigers, as the team pounded out 12 hits in the game. Sarah Fetters and Catalfu each scored twice, with the latter driving in three runs. Brooke Boswell picked up the win, improving her record to 6-3 on the year, striking out five and allowing two earned runs in the seven innings.
In the second game the Gators were held to just three hits, and the highlight of the contest came in the fourth inning when Bodenlos led off with a single and promptly stole second base, securing the single season record while giving her the 54th steal of her career, one off of the record of 55 held by Sue Custer (1983-86) and Beth McCullough (1980-83).
Bodenlos, Wills and Ryan, playing shotstop in the picture at right, picked up the team’s three hits, with the last two coming with an out in the seventh inning. Korotkin pitched the entire seven innings, scattering nine hits and allowing three earned runs while striking out a pair. Wittenberg was led by Fetters, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored, while Julie Zigler was 2-for-3. Amy Myser drove in two runs, while Rachel Hatcher picked up the win, pitching the entire game and striking out two.
The Gators have a tune-up on Tuesday when they host Baldwin-Wallace with the first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
