Multi-Event Championships Day 1 Results

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Gators prepared for the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, with most of the team competing at the Baldwin-Wallace Sparky Adams Invite, while three athletes competed at the NCAC Multi-Event Championships hosted by Wittenberg. Allegheny juniors Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s, Pa./Elk County Catholic) is currently second in the field in the multi-events, while Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) reached another NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark.

Pfeufer is currently sitting in second place by just 17 points after four events (200-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put) with two of her stronger events, long jump and javelin, among the three events on the second day, with the final event being the 800-meter run. Liz Straus (Kirtland, Ohio/Kirtland) is in fourth place, 13 points behind third place, with Emily Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) in sixth place and within striking distance of fifth.

Pfeufer nearly set a new school record in the 100-meter hurdles, running a time of 15.70, .04 off of the record set in 2000, scoring 751 points. Straus’ high-point mark also came in the 100-meter hurdles, earning 678 points with her time of 16.30, while Kiernan’s high jump of 4’7” giving her 512 points.

The remainder of the team used the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational as a tune-up for the conference championships, with only a handful of athletes bettering their previous season bests. Earley’s throw of 168-8 in the hammer throw met the NCAA Division III provisional mark, and would have broken the school record, if not for her toss of 173-2 earlier this season.

The Gators travel to Delaware, Ohio on Thursday, May 3-4 to compete in the league championships, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.
