MEADVILLE, Pa. – In maybe one of the best back-and-forth battles between two conference squads this season, junior Laura Hoch (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) finally came up with the game-winning goal just 31 seconds into the second overtime, giving host Allegheny College an 18-17 victory over visiting Wittenberg University in North Coast Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse action at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
Trailing by two with just over six minutes remaining in regulation, Allegheny (4-9, 2-4 NCAC) came through with the final two goals. Junior Lana Cannon (Peaks Island, Maine/Portland) picked up the first at 6:09, while freshman Christina Zanic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) tallied the equalizer with just 52 ticks left, forcing the first six-minute overtime session.
Held to just one goal and one assist during the opening 60 minutes, Gator leading scorer Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) came up big in the extra periods, including knocking home the first goal 42 seconds in to put the hosts up by one. Wittenberg (2-11, 0-6 NCAC) came right back 26 seconds later as Amber Cupples knotted the game with her fifth goal.
After three minutes of play, the teams switched ends and once again it was Hughes who pushed Allegheny ahead, converting a pass from Michelle Dudevoir (West Point, N.Y./O’Neill). The Tigers weren’t about to go away, however, as Joelle Ghanem nailed a free position shot with 46 seconds remaining, forcing sudden-death overtime.
The Gators, who owned the battle for draw controls (22-17), secured the opening draw in the final overtime and marched quickly down the field to the Wittenberg goal. Hughes appeared ready to take on the task of winning the game when she made her way inside the eight-meter arc, but the crafty veteran found an open Hoch just to the left of the net for the game-winning conversion.
Early in the game, it appeared Allegheny was going to cruise to a win, opening up a 6-2 lead just 15 minutes in. Dudevoir was the catalyst during the opening stretch, tossing in three goals.
What the Gators managed in the opening 15 minutes, Wittenberg equaled in the next 15, scoring six times to Allegheny’s two and knotting the game at 8-8 at the break.
The visitors took control early in the second half with two quick scores less than a minute into the frame and held the lead until Hughes, Hoch, and Dudevoir hit back-to-back-to-back scores over a four-minute span, regaining the lead for the hosts 12-11 at 23:35.
Once again, the Tigers clawed their way back in and took the lead with four of the next five goals setting up the final minutes of regulation.
The game was as close on paper as it was on the field with identical statistics for both teams in ground balls and turnovers, and slight leads for Allegheny in shots (39-30), draw controls (22-17), and fouls (34-32).
Dudevoir led the Blue & Gold with seven points on the day, notching five goals and a pair of helpers. She also moved up Allegheny’s career charts with her offensive explosion, currently sitting eighth in both points (90) and goals (68) and sixth in assists (22).
Dudevoir was complemented on the attack by five multiple-goal scorers, including hat tricks by Hughes, Meg Grossman (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School), and Hoch. Hughes and Grossman also picked up a pair of assists, with the former tallying five ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers. Zanic and Cannon each notched a pair of goals.
Amber Cupples matched Dudevoir with five goals and two assists, while Megan Meige, Jacksons, and Ghanem each tallied hat tricks.
Allegheny goalie Rachael Coons (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) picked up the win with five second-half saves, while Sarah Zane played the full 66:39 for Wittenberg, tallying nine saves.
The Gators close their season on Tuesday, May 1, with a non-conference affair at Notre Dame (Ohio) College beginning at 7 p.m.
