Gators Fall to NCAC-Leading Scots
Apr 24, 2007 Box Score
WOOSTER, Ohio – Facing league-leading and red hot College of Wooster, the Allegheny College women’s lacrosse team gave its all, but came up on the short-end of a 14-7 decision in North Coast Athletic Conference action at Carl Dale Memorial Field.
Allegheny (3-9, 1-4 NCAC) knew it had a tough task ahead if it was going to knock off Wooster (9-3, 5-0 NCAC), which had won seven straight heading into the game. The Gators came out undaunted, securing the opening draw control and eventually making their way to the goal where Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at 26:11.
The Fighting Scots were quick to retaliate, hitting the equalizer on a free position attempt four minutes later, and then going ahead 2-1 on Carly Carey’s first goal of the game. The lead didn’t last long as freshman Christina Zanic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) celebrated her 19th birthday with her 22nd goal of the spring at 19:23.
Unfortunately for the visitors, that was all the scoring to be had in the first half. Meanwhile, Wooster rattled off five goals to take a 7-2 lead at the break.
The Scots started out the second half with another goal by Carey less than two minutes in, but Hughes cut the run with her second goal at 25:02. Following another Wooster score, Allegheny connected on back-to-back shot attempts, the first coming from Hughes and the second on a nifty connection between Zanic and Michelle Dudevoir (West Point, N.Y./O’Neill) at 15:50, cutting the margin to 9-5.
After regrouping, the Scots stemmed the tide with a goal at 14:36, but Dudevoir found Meg Grossman (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School) for a one-timer just a minute later to keep the deficit to four at 10-6. The squads exchanged goals once again, Carey answering first for Wooster before Hughes tallied her fourth and final goal at 8:16. That was as close as Allegheny would get the rest of the way as the hosts closed the contest with three unanswered goals.
With four goals, Hughes passed Eleni Kacoyianni for second on the Gators’ all-time scoring list with 123 career points. The Allegheny junior, who racked up a team-high three draw controls in the game, also moved into a tie for fourth all-time in goals at 87.
Rachael Coons (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) played the final 30:00 in goal for Allegheny, allowing seven goals and making a team-high five saves. Junior Lana Cannon (Peaks Island, Maine/Portland) scooped up a team-high seven ground balls, while freshman Kaitlan Biondi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) managed three caused turnovers.
Carey led Wooster with five goals, while Cassie Brown notched a hat trick. The Scots held a significant advantage in draw controls, corralling 16 of the 23, including four by Jessica Baylor. Goalie Jamie Dannenberg proved to be Allegheny’s main nemesis on the day as the second-year goalie stopped 16 shots.
Allegheny closes out the 2007 NCAC season this Saturday, April 28, by entertaining Wittenberg University at Frank B. Fuhrer Field at 11 a.m.
